Do You Really Need A Bigger Audience?

Do You Really Need A Bigger Audience?

If I had a pound for every time someone told me they just needed a bigger audience, I'd probably be writing this from a villa somewhere hot instead of my office with a coffee I've reheated three times and still forgotten to drink. "I've only got a small email list." "My audience isn't big enough." "If I had another ten thousand followers, I'd be flying." Maybe. Or maybe not.

A client who proved the point

One of my clients came to me to launch her programme. If you'd asked her what she needed before we started working together, she'd probably have said more leads, more visibility, a bigger audience. The usual answer.

I didn't spend my time obsessing over any of that. Instead we looked at the bits everyone loves to skip because they aren't as exciting as posting another reel: her messaging, her customer journey, her positioning, and what people actually needed to hear before they were ready to buy. We questioned things. We simplified things. We changed things that looked perfectly fine on paper but weren't actually helping people make a buying decision.

None of it was particularly glamorous. There was no secret prompt, no magic funnel, no one weird hack that doubled conversions overnight. It was just proper strategy, the sort that starts with better questions instead of jumping straight to solutions.

She tripled her original launch goal and created a multi five figure launch, the first time she'd ever launched that offer, and she did it with what most people would still call a small audience.

Why the answer is often hiding in plain sight

I get genuinely excited about spotting the thing that's hiding in plain sight. It's a bit like watching someone search for their keys while they're still in their hand. That's what a lot of businesses feel like from the outside. The answer is usually there. It's just buried under so much noise you can't see it any more, which is completely understandable, because when you're inside your own business every day, you're too close to it. You're attached to every idea, every offer, every piece of content, every funnel you've spent weeks building. Sometimes you don't need another strategy. You just need someone to walk in, look around, and ask a slightly awkward question, because that's usually where the breakthroughs happen.

What I'd check before growing the audience

If this were my business and I thought I needed a bigger audience, the first thing I'd do is prove it. I'd ask whether I was converting the audience I already had, whether people really understood my offer, whether my messaging made them feel seen, and whether I was making it easy to buy. Only after answering those questions honestly would I start worrying about finding more people, because there's no point pouring more people into the top of the funnel if they're quietly disappearing out of the bottom. That's a much more expensive problem to have.

If this has made you wonder whether your audience is actually the problem, or whether something else is going on, that's exactly why I created the What I'd Change Review. I'll look at your business with fresh eyes, tell you exactly what I'd change, what I'd leave alone, and where I think your biggest opportunity is, so you can stop guessing and start building with confidence.
