Why More Traffic Won't Fix Your Sales
Aug 31, 2026Why More Traffic Won't Fix Your Sales
One of the biggest myths in online business is that if you're not making enough sales, you simply need more people to see what you do. More followers, more leads, more reach, more people on the webinar, more names on the list.
It's an easy thing to believe, because it's what we're constantly told. If sales are slow, the answer must be visibility. If a launch didn't hit target, you obviously didn't have enough people in the room.
After more than thirteen years working inside businesses, I can tell you that visibility is rarely the actual problem people think it is. It's one of the first things I ignore when I start working with someone, not because follower count doesn't matter, but because it's almost never the first thing I'd change.
What I'd look at instead
I'd rather understand what happens after people find you. Can they immediately tell who you help? Do they understand the problem you solve? Is your offer obvious? Does your messaging make them feel understood? Do they know why they should choose you over everyone else, and can they actually see a route to working with you?
If the answer to any of that is no, sending another thousand people to your business won't fix it. It just means another thousand people arrive, feel confused, and leave again. It's pouring more water into a bucket that's already leaking. The answer isn't more water. It's fixing the hole.
This is where I see so many business owners waste time, money and energy solving the wrong problem. They invest in ads before they've nailed their messaging. They grow their Instagram while their offer has become muddled. They spend months trying to increase webinar registrations when the real issue is that the webinar isn't leading people naturally towards the offer. They're working incredibly hard on the wrong part of the business.
The question that changes everything
If this were my business, I'd stop asking "how do I get more people?" and start asking "why aren't more of the people I already have buying?" That question tends to lead somewhere far more interesting.
Sometimes the answer is confidence. Sometimes it's clarity or positioning. Sometimes the business has evolved but the messaging hasn't caught up. Sometimes the offer has become so complicated that people don't know where to start. And sometimes it really is that simple: people don't buy because they don't understand what happens next. One small tweak to a customer journey can outperform months of trying to grow an audience.
That's why I always come back to diagnosis before prescription. Telling every business owner to go and get more leads is lazy advice, because it assumes everyone has the same problem. They don't. Every business is different, every audience is different, every bottleneck is different, which is exactly why I find strategy so fascinating. It's a puzzle: you look at all the pieces, work out where they aren't quite fitting together, and make the smallest possible change that creates the biggest possible impact. Business doesn't always need to become bigger. Sometimes it just needs to become clearer.
What I'd ask you to do this week
Instead of asking how you can get more visibility, ask yourself this: if another hundred people landed on your website today, would they immediately understand why they should work with me? If the answer is anything other than an immediate yes, that's probably where I'd start.
If you're reading this thinking "I have no idea what I'd actually change in my own business any more," that's exactly why the What I'd Change Review exists. I'll look at your business with fresh eyes, work out where the real bottleneck is, and tell you exactly what I'd change, what I'd leave alone, and what I'd prioritise over the next ninety days, so you can stop guessing and start making decisions with confidence.
